It is easy to protect panda bears because they are cute, on the contrary eels…
that is another story
Sustainable Eel Group is a Europe wide conservation and science led organisation working with partner bodies and individuals to accelerate the eel’s recovery.
The Sustainable Eel Group (SEG) is the leading international organisation seeking to accelerate the conservation and management of the European eel. SEG aims for healthy eel populations, distributed throughout their natural range, fulfilling their role in the aquatic environment and supporting sustainable use for the benefit of local economies. Key to this is the collaboration of the scientific, conservation and commercial sectors. SEG initiates and supports scientific research, conservation projects and organises stakeholders’ commitment. Additionally, it provides a standard for a responsible eel sector with traceability from source to market.
THE PROBLEM WE ARE FACING
The main objective is to create awareness about the migratory periods of this animal during its stay in continental water reserves such as lakes and rivers. Poaching, trafficking, pollution, electric turbines and water dams, reduce the number of specimens in an alarming way.

THE CONCEPT
To carry out the identity of this project, we wanted to draw on the meandering shapes of these animals. The design had to be related to this biosphere, but also reflect an institutional aspect. Doing research on which cities could host this event in the coming years, we discovered that all of them, large and small, from London in the United Kingdom to Toledo in Spain, had something very characteristic in common: a river that shapes the map of the city. Therefore, we decided not only to create a relationship between the design and the environment, but also to link it to the city where the event would take place.

PUBLICATION
As a report, each year a publication would be printed, collecting the most important points of the meeting. Discussions, ideas and contributions from experts would be collected in a volume that would also point out the most important characteristics of the region to be restored.

GOODIES
Alongside the publication, we wanted to offer a memory of the city linked to the event, a gift that would remind of SEG’s work and the charm of the location.
